As part of the 32nd Commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi (#Kwibuka32), Saint Paul International School organised a series of activities to honour the victims and promote remembrance among the school community.
The commemoration programme included a Holy Mass dedicated to the victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi, followed by an educational visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial (Gisozi). The activities brought together secondary school students, teachers, parents, and other members of the school community. Participants were encouraged to remember Rwanda’s painful history and to play an active role in building a future founded on unity, peace, and the prevention of genocide.
During the visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, students toured the various exhibition galleries and learned about the history of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, its causes, consequences, and the importance of preserving its memory for future generations. The visit provided an opportunity for reflection and a deeper understanding of the values of peace, reconciliation, and human dignity.
As a sign of respect, students and staff laid flowers at the mass graves and observed a minute of silence in honour of the victims. The school also presented a donation to support the Memorial’s ongoing work in education, remembrance, and the preservation of Rwanda’s history.
The Kigali Genocide Memorial, located in Gisozi, was inaugurated in 2004 and is the final resting place of more than 250,000 victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. In 2023, the memorial was recognised as part of the UNESCO World Heritage List, acknowledging its global significance in preserving the memory of the genocide and promoting education for peace.
The visit was accompanied by Mr. Simeon, the Education Officer of Kimironko Sector, who joined the school community in commemorating the victims and encouraging students to continue promoting unity, compassion, and responsible citizenship.
